The paper aims to describe and analyze educative provincial initiatives in Argentina, aimed at introducing new technologies in educational settings. This being said, the authors argue that over the past few years the introduction of information technologies and communication technologies (ICT) in schools has become one of the most important objectives for provincial governments, due to the potential of these new tools to improve teaching and learning. The paper also suggests that due to the existence of inequality, the introduction of ICT in public schools has become a key factor in achieving greater social equality for students.
The paper is organized as follows. After a brief introduction, the first chapter describes the situation of ICT in several provinces of Argentina, whilst the second section highlights the cases of St. Louis, the City of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Rio Negro and La Rioja, on the design and implementation of policies for encouraging the use of new technologies. For its part, chapter three addresses in detail the programs of the provinces of La Rioja and Río Negro, two jurisdictions that have implemented two different models of introduction of new technologies in classrooms.
It is concluded that:
- the introduction of Communication technologies (ICT) in schools has become one of the main objectives in the short and medium term for local governments
- the introduction of ICTs in education systems in Argentina can improve teaching and learning in schools
- the introduction of ICT in public schools has become a key factor in achieving greater social equality for Argentina’s students
