The paper aims to study the existence of the Kuznets relationship in Latin America, thus looking to analyze the recent evolution of income inequality in the region. This being said, the author argues that changes in inequality are associated with multiple factors related to the development of countries in the region, such as economic growth, the level of human capital, trade openness, economic stability, among others. To evaluate these approaches, the research introduces SEDLAC household surveys from a panel data set is made.
The paper is organized as follows. After a brief introduction, the second section presents a brief review of the literature available on inequality and economic development in the region, whilst the third section provides a description of the data sets used. For its part, chapter four explains the econometric methodology introduced by the author, whereas chapter five discusses the results obtained. Finally, the sixth section presents the conclusions of the research.
In conclusion, the author argues that the results obtained portray how income inequality in Latin America is strongly linked to the interaction of development variables, such human capital levels and trade liberalization. The paper also suggests that it is unlikely that the changes in inequality trends in Latin America are related to economic growth.
