The paper seeks to conceptualise conflict through environmental factors by modelling and exploring environment-conflict relationships. It outlines a project to explore the ecological sources of conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa project and locate the linkages and uncertainty in Eastern Africa. Finally it examines the environmental dimension of tools and techniques for crisis management. Conclusions include:
in Africa, numerous crises, such as those in theGreat Lakes region of Central Africa, in the Horn of Africa, and in areas of West Africa, have been precipitated by conflicts with strong environmental underpinnings.
preventing and managing environmental sources of conflict means identifying ways of sharing environmental resources equitably and sustainably so as to meet the needs of different user groups
it also demands promoting more inclusive and participatory environmental decision-making processes
environmental sources of conflict are inseparable from environmental rights therefore tools and techniques for preventing and managing environmental sources of conflict must engage challenging issues of environmental rights if they are to have an effective and sustainable impact
