This document is intended as a practical guide to assist protected area managers in identifying and securing appropriate and sustainable finance. The guidelines explore financing options for protected areas and provide advice and information on sustainable financing. Part A starts by demonstrating the need for both public and private financing to ensure the continued provision of private and public goods and services from protected areas. It then develops a step-by-step process which protected area managers can use to create business and financial plans tailored to the needs and strengths of their protected area. Part B discusses the mechanisms for generating revenue flows from both public and private sources and gives an overview of potential grant-based sources of financing. Part C consists of successful example case studies from South Africa, Costa Rica and New Zealand.
