CATIE was created on July 1, 1973, through an agreement between IICA and the Costa Rican government. The center seeks to contribute to rural poverty reduction by promoting competitive and sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, through higher education, research and technical cooperation.
CATIE as a knowledge center works on development, integration and dissemination of appropriate technologies and methodologies for sustainable agriculture, agro forestry and natural resource management. The institute's main lines of research are:

CATIE's library Orton Memorila library specializes in agriculture environmental science, forestry, animal husbandry, and related fields. The library has its own website where there is access to the research publications.
