The University was founded in 1919 as the first in Russia educational institution of higher education specialized in finance, Moscow Institute of Finance and Economics. Since 1991 it is called the State Finance Academy. Today the Financial University is the largest educational and research complex, one of Russia’s leading educational and research centers in the fields of:

- financial management and insurance
- taxes and taxation
- accounting and analysis and audit
- international economic relations
- risk analysis and crisis management
- mathematical methods in economics
- public and municipal administration

The Financial University comprises a whole network of regional branches – affiliates and representative offices as well as finance and economics colleges. The annual number of students at the University is more than 30 thousand, with dozens of thousands of specialists taking professional development courses.
