Established at 1906, the University aims at promoting and pursuing higher education by linking up traditionally separated subjects in the light of the ever-changing global scenario, exploring new dimensions of academic administration free of bureaucratic impediments and setting up a role model for academic leadership. The University consists of many academic centers for advanced studies, these include:
- centre for Ambedkar Studies
- centre for Marxian studies
- centre for refugee studies
- centre for European Studies
- centre of Indeology
- centre for knowledge based systems
The University offers a wide range of certificate courses, diplomas, postgraduate and undergraduate programs, in addition to fellowships opportunities. The University comprised of faculties of arts, engineering and science. It contains different schools for different fields which include:
- natural product studies
- oceanographic studies
- water resources & engineering
- women’s studies
- education technology
- energy studies
