The Department of Geography, University of Ilorin was established in 1976 and started postgraduate degree programs in 1980-82. Today, the department runs two postgraduate professional programs, a Postgraduate Diploma in Geography Information Systems and a Masters in Geographic Information Systems in addition to various other degree programs.
