AKHP was established by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 1997. Addressing current challenges and opportunities,
AKHP builds bridges across communities in the region, helping Central Asians
share their traditions and reestablish links with the outside world. AKHP is
founded on the belief that it is impossible to encourage a civil, tolerant, democratic,
and humane society without citizens capable of finding creative solutions,
making responsible decisions and considering the ethics of their actions.
AKHP offers an interdisciplinary humanities
curriculum for undergraduate students. The AKHP university course encompasses
literature, philosophy, history, the social sciences, music, architecture,
drama, poetry, folklore, and the natural sciences.
Outreach activities at AKHP include a
regular Public Lecture Series, cultural/educational events and the creation and
distribution of informative and awareness-raising publications.
