Factors influencing contribution of informal businesses to private sector development in Liberia

Determining major factors influencing the contribution of grassroots businesses to post-conflict socio-economic development in Liberia

GDNet

This paper which profiles factors influencing contribution of informal businesses to private sector development is a relatively unexplored area of research in Liberia. Research has shown that grassroots businesses provide needed goods, services, and livelihoods in inaccessible parts of Liberia. The findings of this research can be used by key stakeholders to contribute to improving the economic situation for grassroots businesses in Liberia.

The research findings are based on quantitative data from a survey of 1,823 grassroots business owners from the Central Region of Liberia (CRL), comprising Bong and Margibi Counties, and qualitative data from 48 key informant interviews and 22 focus groups. The CRL was selected as the sampling frame and geographic focus of the research because it was the most representative region of the country that could be studied given limited resources and logistical constraints.
