GDNet Thematic & Regional Window Guidelines

Regional & Thematic Update Guidelines

GDNet thematic & regional windows guidelines

GDNet regional windows (RWs) and thematic windows (TWs) are online windows that cater for regional and thematic flavor. Each window is managed either in partnership with a Regional Network Partner or by the Cairo team and both are a repackaged service of the GDNet Knowledgebase (KB).

Regional windows feature the latest policy relevant social science research. Each window is accessible through a unique URL, used for all online or in-print marketing material, such as South Asia, East Asia, Innovation, or Agriculture. Some RWs are bilingual; French in Africa, Spanish in LAC, and Arabic in MENA, requiring special attention. All changes are made on the GDNet content management system, also known as the Comprehensive Web Environment (CWE).

Thematic windows are another way of presenting information, irrespective of region, and are an interesting way of highlighting international trends according to theme. See the Gender, Macroeconomics and Economic Growth, and Private Sector Development portals for some good examples.

Steps for Updating Components

Regional Windows & Thematic Pages

The main page on any regional window, such as South Asia, is updated on a weekly basis. The documents and researchers listing page, such as Poverty & Inequality, automatically index additions to the Knowledgebase and require no updates.

Featured Papers & Date Stamps

The date stamp reflects when a window was last updated and is changed once a week. The center dissolve on all regional windows is the most expensive landscape, receives the most attention, and is used to feature papers from the Knowledge Base (KB). See the Latin America and Africa windows for good examples.

Featured Researcher

This section involves a researcher you would like to highlight. A featured researcher should have a full profile, including photo, CV, and preferably have research papers on the KB. See Water, Law and Rights, and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) for more good examples.

Funding Opportunities (FOs)

Funding Opportunities are unique to regional windows because they showcase region- and country-specific funding opportunities. Research and scholarship grants are preferred, ones that are brief, to-the-point and concise. See the Africa and Latin America window.

News, Jobs, and Events

News, jobs, and events are also unique to regional windows and typically feature region-specific information. Academic jobs and research positions are highly recommended in addition to seminars and workshops. See the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) window.

Languages

Three of the GDNet regional windows are available in two languages. The Africa window in both English and French; Latin America in English and Spanish; and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in English and Arabic

Networking and Outreach

Get in touch with featured researchers on both regional and thematic windows, and let them know they have been featured, create ownership and maintain communication with users. After all, we're all about communication!

Final Remarks
  • Your window is your home; it is your responsibility to make sure it’s tidy, clean, and balanced
  • Thematic windows are where you can shed light on our users’ interesting work
  • Clearly identify yourself on the window, include your name and email so users can contact you with comments, questions, or concerns. Be accessible
  • Be creative with your selections, but information needs to be recent and relevant at all times
  • Keep in mind what you’re trying to communicate to your audience as you make your selections
  • Is your window welcoming? Does it make you want to stay there longer? Consider PR and Marketing tactics when doing this
  • Be open to feedback and criticism, and welcome new ideas and suggestions from users
