Gender and perception on climate change in Bahi and Kondoa Districts, Dodoma Region, Tanzania

A gender perspective to climate change for better adaptation plans

Stefan Boness/Panos Pictures

The implications of climate change are stronger in Africa where prolonged floods and severe droughts are common. East African countries, including Tanzania, are already among the most countries suffering from food insecurity in the world. Climate change is a major threat to agriculture, which is the main living of the poor in Africa, of whom 70% are women. This paper presents results from a study, disaggregating men and women’s perceptions on the effect of climate change on their livelihood and activities, conducted in a semi-arid area prone to drought.

Inequalities existing between men and women, mainly arising from customary laws that often restrict women’s land rights, hinder women’s access to important resources such as land credit, which further undermines their adaptive capacity.
