The realization of the end goal of economic integration
In January 2007, leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) affirmed their commitment to the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 and to transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labor, and freer flow of capital. This paper provides a summary assessment of the ASEAN on the state of financial integration in the region, as well as information on the financial integration milestones blueprint that will lay out a comprehensive program to achieve ASEAN financial integration by 2015. Further, it recommends some institutional and policy reforms to be implemented to 2020. Financial integration is essentially a market‑driven process, which can be set in motion by domestic financial market liberalization.
