The Global Development Network's 10th Annual Conference on "Natural Resources and Development" was held in Kuwait. Hosted by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) at their headquarters in Kuwait City, the three-day conference provided a platform to further the debate on the crucial relationship between natural resources and development.
The Opening Session featured remarks from Ernesto Zedillo, Chair, GDN Board of Director and Director, Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, H.E Mohammed al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, State of Kuwait and Abdlatif Yousef Al-Hamad, Director General and Chairman (AFESD). Justin Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics, World Bank delivered the keynote address on “Natural Resources, Economic Growth and Future Generations: How to Create a Win-win Outcome for Everyone?”. The conference was attended by more than 450 eminent academics and researchers, members of multilateral development organizations and policy-makers agreeing that policy initiatives must be taken to turn resources into a blessing. “The resource-rich poor countries have to learn fast from the resource-rich countries that have succeeded. There is an urgency to find policy solutions, since poor people have high expectations, and natural resources are exhaustible,” said Ernesto Zedillo, Chair of the Global Development Network and former President of Mexico.
